The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the U.S. Defense Department's agency for high-risk, high-reward research. It was founded in 1958 as ARPA, after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, to keep the U.S. ahead in science and technology.
Achievements

DARPA funded the ARPANET, the forerunner of the internet, and helped develop stealth aircraft, GPS satellites and many other technologies. It works through contracts with universities and companies rather than its own laboratories.
In UFO discussions

DARPA is often named in claims about hidden advanced technology. It sponsored the 100 Year Starship study in 2011 to encourage research on interstellar travel, and has funded unusual physics projects. No DARPA involvement in UFO investigation or crash retrieval has been confirmed.
