Out There, published by Simon & Schuster in 1990, claimed that in 1987 a group of about 17 specialists was formed under the Defense Intelligence Agency to investigate UFO reports, and that one of its tasks was to assess the authenticity of the "Majestic 12" documents. Drawing on interviews with officials, the book also discussed the Roswell story.[2][3]

The book was widely read but its central claims were disputed. Skeptic Philip Klass wrote a critical review in 1990 challenging the claim that the Defense Intelligence Agency had set up such a group in 1987.[2][3]
