John Burroughs is a former U.S. Air Force security police airman who was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in England. In the early hours of 26 December 1980, he was one of the first airmen to go into Rendlesham Forest to investigate lights, alongside Sgt. Jim Penniston, and he was also present on a later night.

Burroughs said he later suffered health problems, including heart damage, that he believed were caused by exposure to the object. After years of effort, and with help from Senator John McCain's office, the Department of Veterans Affairs granted him medical benefits in 2015. He has appeared in documentaries and co-wrote a book about the incident.
