Ralph Blumenthal is an American journalist and author who reported for The New York Times from 1964 to 2009. With Leslie Kean and Helene Cooper he co-wrote the December 2017 Times story that revealed the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, and in 2023 he and Kean reported David Grusch's claims of a secret UFO retrieval program.[1][2]
Career
Blumenthal began as a reporter and columnist for a Texas newspaper in 1963 and joined the Times as a news clerk in 1964. He was a metro and Westchester correspondent, a foreign correspondent in West Germany, South Vietnam and Cambodia from 1968 to 1971, an investigative and crime reporter from 1971 to 1994, an arts and culture reporter, and the paper's Southwest bureau chief from 2003 to 2008. He led the Times metro team that won the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.[2]
UFO reporting
The 16 December 2017 article by Cooper, Blumenthal and Kean reported that the Defense Department had spent about $22 million on a secret program investigating UFOs, and published two Navy videos. It is widely seen as the start of the modern era of official interest in UAP. On 5 June 2023 Blumenthal and Kean reported in The Debrief that former intelligence officer David Grusch had told Congress and the inspector general that the U.S. held craft of non-human origin.[1][3][4]
Books
Blumenthal's seven books include works on organised crime and on New York's Stork Club, Miracle at Sing Sing (2004) about prison reformer Lewis Lawes, and The Believer: Alien Encounters, Hard Science, and the Passion of John Mack (2021), the first biography of the Harvard psychiatrist who studied people reporting alien abductions. With his wife, Deborah Blumenthal, he wrote a children's book on UFOs in 2023. He has taught journalism at Baruch College and Phillips Exeter Academy.[1][2]
