Reptilians (also called reptoids or lizard people) are reptile-like humanoids that appear in science fiction, ufology and conspiracy theories. The idea that shape-shifting reptilian aliens secretly control the world was popularised by British conspiracy theorist David Icke.[1]

Political scientist Michael Barkun traces the idea to Robert E. Howard's 1929 story "The Shadow Kingdom", about serpent men who could take human form. In the 1940s American occultist Maurice Doreal wrote about a "serpent race" that could appear human, and Barkun believes Doreal's writings later fed into Icke's work. Historian Edward Guimont has argued that the theory also drew on colonial-era legends about Africa.[1]

Some abduction accounts describe reptile-like beings. One of the earliest is that of Herbert Schirmer, a police officer in Ashland, Nebraska, who recalled under hypnosis being taken aboard a UFO in 1967 by humanoids with a slightly reptilian look and a winged-serpent emblem; skeptics consider it a hoax.[1]

In The Biggest Secret (1999), Icke claimed that tall, blood-drinking, shape-shifting reptilians from the Alpha Draconis star system, hiding in underground bases, are behind a worldwide conspiracy, and that many world leaders and royal families are related to them.[1] He has drawn large audiences, and a 2013 poll found that about 4% of American voters said they believed his ideas.[1]

The idea is often used as a joke: a 2003 Ontario election campaign called a rival an "evil reptilian kitten-eater", and a ballot in the 2008 Minnesota Senate recount was cast for "Lizard People".[1]
