The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was a missile defence program announced by President Ronald Reagan in March 1983. Nicknamed "Star Wars", it aimed to develop space- and ground-based systems, including lasers and interceptors, to destroy incoming Soviet nuclear missiles.

SDI funded much research but never deployed its most ambitious systems. In 1993 it was reorganised into the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, the forerunner of today's Missile Defense Agency.
