Steinman wrote to many scientists named in rumours about crashed saucers. In 1983 Robert Sarbacher, a former Pentagon research consultant, replied to him, saying he had heard that crashed saucer material was studied at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and naming scientists he believed were involved, including Vannevar Bush and John von Neumann. Steinman also contacted Penn State president Eric Walker, whose answers he considered evasive.

The Sarbacher letter is still widely cited. Steinman's Aztec conclusions are not accepted by most researchers, who consider the Aztec story a hoax.
