Rendlesham Forest is a public woodland of about 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) in Suffolk, England, managed by Forestry England. It is known worldwide as the site of the Rendlesham Forest incident of December 1980, when U.S. Air Force personnel from neighbouring RAF Woodbridge reported strange lights and a possible landed craft among the trees.[1][2]

The forest lies in the former Suffolk Coastal district, in the parishes of Bromeswell, Eyke, Capel St Andrew and Butley. It is mixed woodland and forms part of the Sandlings Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest, with facilities for walkers, cyclists and campers. A large area was cleared in 1943 to build RAF Woodbridge.[1]

The bases

During the Cold War the twin bases of RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters, either side of the forest, were used by the U.S. Air Force.[2]

Over several nights in late December 1980, airmen from RAF Woodbridge reported seeing lights in the forest and, in one account, a small metallic craft. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, the deputy base commander, led a patrol into the forest and recorded his observations on tape, and he later wrote a memo describing the events, which was released in 1983. Skeptics have argued that the lights were the beam of the Orford Ness lighthouse on the coast, bright stars and a fireball, while some of the witnesses have continued to insist they saw a craft.[2]
