Pascagoula is a city on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, the seat of Jackson County, at the mouth of the Pascagoula River. It is home to one of the largest shipyards in the United States and is known in UFO history for the 1973 claim by two shipyard workers, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker, that they were abducted by aliens while fishing.[1][2]
The city

Pascagoula lies on Mississippi Sound, part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area, and had a population of 22,010 at the 2020 census. Its name comes from the Pascagoula people. It was incorporated as a village in 1892 and became a city in 1901. A 1939 mural in the post office illustrates the local "Legend of the Singing River".[1]
Industry
The city's largest employer is Ingalls Shipbuilding, owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest private employer at a single site in Mississippi, which builds warships for the U.S. Navy. A large Chevron oil refinery and a Rolls-Royce naval marine plant are also located there.[1]
Hurricane Katrina
On 29 August 2005 Hurricane Katrina drove a storm surge of about 6 metres (20 feet) into Pascagoula, flooding about 92 per cent of the city and destroying most homes along Beach Boulevard.[1]
The 1973 abduction claim
On the evening of 11 October 1973 Hickson and Parker said that while fishing from an old pier on the Pascagoula River they were taken aboard a craft by strange beings and examined. Their account drew national attention, and the case remains one of the best-known abduction claims. In June 2019 the city placed a historical marker near the site of the reported encounter.[2][3]
