1984 in UFO history — the UAP Timeline records 8 events in 1984, mostly about secrecy & cover-up and nuclear & missile sites. People named in these events include John Mills, Robert Hastings, Robert Jacobs, Kingston George, Christopher "Kit" Green.

Overview

In 1984 the "Majestic 12" documents first began circulating among ufologists. They described an alleged secret committee supposedly formed by President Truman in 1947 to recover and investigate alien spacecraft. They were later largely shown to be forgeries, and the FBI called them "completely bogus."[1] See also Jaime Shandera. In the Hudson Valley of New York, the wave of "Westchester Boomerang" sightings that had begun in 1983 continued. State police attributed them to pilots flying light aircraft in formation as a hoax.[2] On 28 June residents reported a boomerang-shaped object moving at treetop level with a slight buzz, and on 24 July security police at the Indian Point nuclear plant reported a large object with oscillating lights and failing security systems.[3]

Several 1984 entries concern secrecy. On 7 August an Air Force representative admitted to a House subcommittee that the Air Force had restricted public access to Groom Mountain, Nevada, which overlooks Area 51, without legal authority.[3] On 16 May an Army counterintelligence director wrote in a records reply that the Army had briefly had an in-house "Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit" that unofficially analysed UFOs in the 1950s, but said no records existed.[3] See Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit.

Other entries are claims. On 5 May an anonymous source told a journalist that a Defense Support Program satellite had detected a "fast walker" object that passed within 1.8 miles of it at 22,000 mph.[4] Technical Sergeant John Mills at Vandenberg Air Force Base said he was shown classified film of Minuteman III dummy warheads in flight during a test.[5] Christopher "Kit" Green told Jacques Vallée of a soldier whose nuclear-security testing unit used helicopters designed to look like flying saucers. Alleged CIA documents describe an anomaly investigated by the Army's remote viewers during military trials.[4]
