In August 2022 Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough told the website Liberation Times that Luis Elizondo, who had said he led the Pentagon's AATIP programme, "provides technical advice on a variety of classified topics for the U.S. Space Force".[1]

The statement

The confirmation, published on 23 August 2022 by journalist Christopher Sharp, followed weeks of exchanges with the Defense Department. Gough's statement did not say whether Elizondo was a contractor or had another formal arrangement; unnamed sources told Liberation Times that the work related directly to UAP, which the department did not confirm. Elizondo said the statement was a welcome change from earlier efforts to obscure his role but did not undo years of misstatements about his service, and praised Space Force personnel for taking the subject seriously.[1]

Elizondo's disputed role

Elizondo, a former Army counterintelligence officer who joined the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in 2008, resigned in late 2017, citing excessive secrecy, and joined To The Stars Academy, leaving it in late 2020. A Pentagon spokesperson said in 2019 that he had "no responsibilities" with regard to AATIP while in that office, and in 2021 he filed an Inspector General complaint alleging a campaign to discredit him. Liberation Times argued that a Space Force advisory role requiring clearances was hard to reconcile with the department's earlier statements.[1][2]

Elizondo continued his public advocacy for UAP transparency. His memoir, Imminent: Inside the Pentagon's Hunt for UFOs, published in August 2024, debuted at number one on the New York Times best-seller list, and a second book was scheduled for 2026.[2]
