Eric Weinstein, a mathematician and podcast host who was managing director of Peter Thiel's investment firm Thiel Capital, has repeatedly suggested that UFO reports may be bound up with secret U.S. aerospace programs and that fundamental physics may have been deliberately steered or hidden. According to the testimony, in February 2023 he speculated that the secretive hedge fund Renaissance Technologies might hold mathematical insights relevant to the physics behind UAP.[1][2]

Weinstein earned a doctorate in mathematics from Harvard in 1992, hosts the podcast The Portal, coined the phrase "intellectual dark web", and has proposed a "theory of everything" called Geometric Unity, which physicists have largely received with skepticism. As of 2024 he was listed on the research team of Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb's Galileo Project.[1]

His UAP ideas

In November 2022 Weinstein asked publicly whether the United States had built fake UFOs, and on 22 February 2023 he posted a video titled "We May Be Faking a UFO Situation". In 2025 he summarised his view as "UAP = SAP": that many UAP reports reflect unacknowledged special access programs, either misidentified classified craft or deliberate deception, on the model of the Second World War deceptions that hid the Normandy landings. He has argued that physics began to stagnate after the 1969 Mansfield Amendment restricted military funding of basic research, and that a "golden age" of general relativity from the 1950s may have hidden anti-gravity work.[2]

Renaissance Technologies

Renaissance, founded by mathematician and former code-breaker Jim Simons, is famously secretive and has hired many physicists and mathematicians, which makes it an object of speculation. In a May 2026 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Weinstein again said the United States probably runs special access programs with advanced aerospace technology.[3][4]

Skeptic Mick West, responding to Weinstein in online exchanges in 2025, argued that there is no evidence of a cover-up and that slow progress in physics may simply reflect how hard the problems are. No evidence connects Renaissance to UAP. Simons died in May 2024.[2][3]
