Howard Blum (born 1948) is an American journalist and author, formerly a reporter for The New York Times, whose 1990 book Out There: The Government's Secret Quest for Extraterrestrials described an alleged secret Pentagon "UFO Working Group".[1][2]
Journalism
Blum was educated at the Horace Mann School and Stanford University. He reported for The Village Voice and from 1986 for The New York Times, receiving two Pulitzer Prize nominations, and has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1994. His books include Gangland (1993), The Brigade (2001) and American Lightning (2008), which won the Edgar Award for best fact crime.[1]
Out There

Out There, published by Simon & Schuster in 1990, claimed that in 1987 a group of about 17 specialists was formed under the Defense Intelligence Agency to investigate UFO reports, and that one of its tasks was to assess the authenticity of the "Majestic 12" documents. Drawing on interviews with officials, the book also discussed the Roswell story.[2][3]
Reception

The book was widely read but its central claims were disputed. Skeptic Philip Klass wrote a critical review in 1990 challenging the claim that the Defense Intelligence Agency had set up such a group in 1987.[2][3]
