Wilson is the central figure in the "Wilson–Davis notes", a document that surfaced online in 2019. It claims to record a 2002 conversation in which Wilson told physicist Eric Davis that, in 1997, he had tried to gain access to a UFO reverse-engineering program run by a defence contractor and was refused. The notes were reportedly found among the papers of astronaut Edgar Mitchell.

Wilson has denied the conversation took place, and Davis has not confirmed writing the notes. Members of Congress asked about the document at a 2022 hearing. Its authenticity remains disputed.
