Project Moon Dust was an operation to recover objects and debris from space vehicles that had survived re-entry from space to earth. However, there have been many rumors about the project which connected it to the UFO phenomenon.

The 4602d AISS ran a secret project in which the US Air Force deployed covert quick reaction intelligence teams around the world to recover unidentified objects and debris from space. In 1961, an AISS operation named Project Moon Dust was tasked in a letter known as the ‘Betz Memo’ to ‘locate, recover and deliver descended foreign space vehicles.' Another project, Operation Blue Fly, was proposed to deliver the recovered objects to the Foreign Technology Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

In his 1990 book, Out There, the New York Times journalist Howard Blum asserted that the ‘foreign space vehicles’ the US Air Force sought included craft of extra-terrestrial origin and that Moon Dust was a kind of ‘UFO SWAT team’. The book described the secret team’s role as ‘field exploitation of unidentified flying objects, or known Soviet/Bloc aerospace vehicles, weapons systems, and/or residual components of such equipment.' Surprisingly, declassified Project Blue Book and US Defense Intelligence Agency files do show the US was involved in a covert worldwide ‘UFO’ investigation and recovery program. Operation Moon Dust definitely involved retrieval of ‘foreign technology’ from other countries, but it also specifically sought ‘Unidentified Flying Objects’ and ‘flying saucers'.

There is also a reference to ‘Moon Dust’ in a report about an object found near Santa Cruz in Bolivia in 1979.

Perhaps the most intriguing smoking gun, however, is a heavily redacted declassified Central Intelligence Agency document from March 1968 that describes how a ‘huge metallic disc-shaped object with a six-foot base and four feet in height was found in a crater’ eight kilometers north-east of Pokhara in Nepal. Portions of a similar object were found near other villages. There is nothing in the censored files to show if any object was ever recovered or what it was. Author and researcher Kevin Randle said that US Embassy staff were allowed to view three photographs of the recovered objects, but not a fourth. Intriguingly, the subject of the message was again ‘Moon Dust’.

The codename probably became too overt because in 1987 the US Air Force said Project Moon Dust ‘no longer officially exists’. It announced the name was ‘replaced by another name that was still classified’. That of course suggests Operation Moon Dust’s successor continues – that somewhere out there, someone is still quietly collecting UAP debris. Several sources have claimed that a secret collection unit using ex-military and intelligence experts still exists but that it is run through the cover of a group of US aerospace corporations.

Is it possible that all the recovered objects were Soviet and other space debris? Yes, but we won't know for sure until they release the photos of what actually crashed in Nepal or the other places (preference to the Nepal case).
