Camp Hero is a former U.S. military base on Montauk Point at the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, now Camp Hero State Park. It is known in conspiracy lore as the supposed site of the "Montauk Project", a story of secret time-travel and mind-control experiments.[1]

The U.S. Army commissioned the site in 1942 as a coastal defence station, disguised as a fishing village, to guard New York against attack from the sea. It was named after Major General Andrew Hero Jr., and had batteries of 16-inch and 6-inch guns. After the war the site became Montauk Air Force Station, a radar station whose large AN/FPS-35 radar tower still stands. The military installation closed in 1981.[1][2]

In 1984 the federal government's attempt to sell the site to developers met protests from environmentalists, and most of it was passed through the National Park Service to New York State. A later plan for a golf course was dropped in 1999 over concerns about rare species and groundwater, and Camp Hero State Park opened on 18 September 2002. Parts of the former base are listed as a historic site, and the park is popular for hiking and surf fishing.[1][3]

In 1992 Preston Nichols and Peter Moon published The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time, which claimed that secret experiments in mind control and time travel had been carried out under the base. The book became popular with conspiracy theorists and led to several sequels. There is no evidence for its claims.[1]
