In April and May 2001 Steven Greer's Disclosure Project briefed members of Congress and officials and held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, arguing that UFOs were real and that a covert group ran parts of the issue through private contractor projects beyond government oversight. It called for open congressional hearings.[1][2]
The briefing document

The project gave members of Congress and officials a briefing document of several hundred pages with edited transcripts of witness testimony. Greer said the project had identified several hundred witnesses from the armed services, intelligence agencies, NASA and other bodies; more than 100 had been videotaped and about 70 transcribed.[2][3]
The press conference
On 9 May 2001 Greer held a press conference in the National Press Club ballroom with more than twenty witnesses, including former Federal Aviation Administration official John Callahan, Air Force Sergeant Clifford Stone, Major George Filer, former missile officer Robert Salas and space-policy activist Carol Rosin. Greer said the testimony established that "we are not alone". The event was streamed online.[2][3]
The demands
The project called for open congressional hearings on the extraterrestrial presence, legislation banning weapons in space, an executive order protecting witnesses who feared breaking security oaths and the declassification of secret projects, and argued that suppressed energy technologies could solve the global energy crisis.[2]
Reception
The event drew a large online audience but limited mainstream coverage; reports noted official dismissals and skeptics' doubts that such secrets could be kept, and Greer's claims about zero-point energy were especially criticised.[1][3]
Legacy
The Disclosure Project's claims went largely unconfirmed. Many of its themes, including congressional briefings, witness testimony and unacknowledged contractor programs, resurfaced in the 2020s through official channels, though the specific claims remain unverified.[3][4]
