The Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) was founded by Steven Greer in 1990. Its main activity is "contact" fieldwork, in which groups go to remote locations and use meditation, lights and sounds to try to signal UFOs and invite contact, an approach Greer calls CE-5, or close encounters of the fifth kind.

CSETI led to Greer's Disclosure Project (1993), which collected testimony from military and government witnesses. In the 1990s Greer said he had briefed officials including CIA Director James Woolsey on behalf of CSETI.

Critics say CSETI's contact events produce sightings of aircraft, satellites and other ordinary lights, and they have questioned the cost of attending its retreats. Supporters report personal experiences they consider meaningful.
