On 5 April 1966, under chairman Mendel Rivers, the committee held a short hearing on UFOs after the Michigan sightings and pressure from Rep. Gerald Ford. Air Force Secretary Harold Brown and astronomer J. Allen Hynek testified, and the hearing led the Air Force to fund the Condon Committee study. In recent years the committee's members have helped add UAP reporting, AARO and whistleblower protections to defence bills.
