Roswell is a city in southeastern New Mexico, best known for the 1947 incident in which the local Army Air Field announced it had recovered a "flying disc". In 1947 it was home to Roswell Army Air Field and the 509th Bomb Group, the only unit in the world then armed with atomic bombs.

Since the 1980s Roswell has embraced its fame, with the International UFO Museum and Research Center, opened in 1992, and an annual UFO festival each July. Many former base personnel and residents have given accounts of the 1947 events, which researchers have collected in books and affidavits.
