Forbidden Science is the title of the published journals of French-American scientist and UFO researcher Jacques Vallée, which record his work on computing, venture capital and the scientific study of UFOs from 1957 onwards. The first volume appeared in 1992 and the series has continued in later volumes.[1][2]
Volumes
The first volume, Forbidden Science: Journals, 1957–1969, was published by North Atlantic Books in 1992 and reissued by Anomalist Books in 2017. Later volumes cover 1970–1979, 1980–1989, 1990–1999, 2000–2009 and 2010–2019, and a seventh, covering 2020–2025, was listed in 2026.[1][2]
Content
The first volume describes how, amid a wave of sightings in the 1960s, UFOs became a "forbidden" subject for science, and records Vallée's collaboration with astronomer J. Allen Hynek, the Air Force's UFO consultant. In a journal entry from May 1967, Vallée describes the informal network of scientists interested in UFOs that Hynek called the "Invisible College", after the group of scholars that preceded the Royal Society; a later entry records a reunion of the group in 1969.[1][3]
Reception
Reviewing the sixth volume in the Journal of Scientific Exploration in 2026, George M. Eberhart described the series as Vallée's ongoing memoirs.[4]
