The researcher Grant Cameron has described a meeting about Jim Penniston's health and his experiences. It brought together Penniston, one of the key witnesses in the December 1980 Rendlesham Forest incident in England, the former CIA physician Kit Green, and a lawyer. The meeting's details are known only from Cameron's account.[1] It links two threads of UFO research: the Rendlesham witnesses' long campaign over health problems they blame on the encounter, and Green's study of medical effects in people who report close encounters.[8][11]

Penniston

Penniston was a U.S. Air Force security staff sergeant in the 81st Security Police Squadron.[2][5] At about 3 a.m. on 26 December 1980 he, Airman First Class John Burroughs and Airman Ed Cabansag went to investigate lights in the forest east of RAF Woodbridge's east gate.[5] Penniston said he approached and touched a landed triangular craft, which he found very warm to the touch. There was no publicised mention of this at the time, and no other witness corroborates it.[2] The deputy base commander, Lt. Col. Charles Halt, wrote in his memo that patrolmen saw "a strange glowing object", and that the next day investigators found depressions in the ground and unusual radiation readings.[9]

Years later Penniston said that when he touched the craft, a stream of binary code was transmitted into his mind. He wrote it down in a notebook, and decoded it was said to read in part "exploration of humanity continuous", with an "origin year 8100".[3] This claim was not in his earliest statements:[3]

  • No verification. No branch of the U.S. military, the British Ministry of Defence or any scientific body has validated the code.
  • Decoding. Skeptics note that binary strings can be decoded many ways depending on formatting assumptions.
  • The notebook. Critics have noted that notebook pages shown in a documentary did not display the binary strings.

Health and the lawyer

Like Burroughs, Penniston has reported health problems that he attributes to the encounter.[3][10] Burroughs fought for years to obtain his medical records:[11]

  • The settlement. In 2015 the Department of Veterans Affairs granted him disability coverage for illnesses he blamed on radiation from the event. He has heart problems and a pacemaker.
  • Condign. He cited the declassified British Project Condign study. It says that at Rendlesham "several observers were probably exposed to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) radiation".
  • His lawyer. Pat Frascogna, the lawyer who represented him, said they had been denied records from 1979 that would have shown Burroughs was healthy when he joined the Air Force.
  • Nick Pope. The former MoD official called the payout "official confirmation that what they encountered was real, and caused them physical harm".

Frascogna has also been described as representing Penniston, but the account available does not identify the lawyer at the Green meeting.[1][11]

Kit Green

Christopher "Kit" Green is a medical doctor with a particular interest in military medicine. He was a longtime CIA employee and intelligence contractor, and a recurring figure in UFO research.[1] He later worked for General Motors. He has long studied the reported health effects of close encounters with UAP, including for the Pentagon's AAWSAP program.

The Stanford immunologist Garry Nolan has described how unusual injury cases were referred to Green:[6][8]

  • The patients. Cases among defence and intelligence personnel were passed to "a guy by the name of Dr. Kit Green", who was "in charge of studying some of these individuals". A subset of them reported seeing UAP or being close to something that made them sick.
  • The scans. Nolan studied their brain scans. He first took them to show damage, and later found an unusual feature of the basal ganglia instead.
  • The "Invisible College". Nolan names Green, Jacques Vallée, Eric Davis and Colm Kelleher as the core of this informal circle.

Reports of Green's and Nolan's claims about injured personnel have also appeared in the technology press.[7] The Wikipedia page listed among this article's sources under "Kit Green" concerns a different person, an English performer, and has no bearing on the physician.[4]

No other participant has publicly described the meeting, and no official record of it is known.[1] Rendlesham remains Britain's best-known UFO case.[2][9] Skeptics argue the airmen saw a fireball, the beam of the Orford Ness lighthouse and other lights.[2][5] Burroughs and Cabansag said at the time that they followed a light for about two miles before realising it came from a lighthouse. The light Halt recorded two nights later flashed every five seconds, the lighthouse's rate.[2] The Ministry of Defence concluded that the event posed no threat to national security, and later released its complete Rendlesham file through the National Archives.[2][9]
