The National Security Agency (NSA) is the U.S. agency responsible for signals intelligence and code-breaking, created in 1952. Its UFO role became public in 1980, when a lawsuit by Citizens Against UFO Secrecy forced it to acknowledge about 135 UFO-related documents, which it withheld for national security reasons. A judge upheld this after reviewing a classified affidavit.

Heavily redacted versions of these documents were later released, along with a few NSA papers on UFOs, including a 1968 essay urging study. Several people in UFO stories claim NSA connections, including Dan Sherman, who said he was trained to receive alien messages.
