The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a hardened U.S. military command centre built inside Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. For decades it was the headquarters of NORAD's operations, tracking aircraft, missiles and objects in space — including unidentified ones — over North America.[1][2]

Excavation began on 18 May 1961 under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the complex was completed in 1966 and fully operational by early 1967. It lies under about 600 metres (2,000 feet) of rock. Behind a 25-ton blast door, fifteen three-storey buildings stand on more than 1,000 springs to absorb shock from a nuclear blast, and the complex is certified to withstand an electromagnetic pulse.[1]

During the Cold War the complex housed NORAD's command centre, responsible for warning of air and missile attack. In 2008 NORAD and U.S. Northern Command moved their main operations to nearby Peterson Air Force Base, and the mountain became an alternate command centre and training site. In 2015 a $700 million contract was announced to move further systems into the complex and protect them against electromagnetic pulses.[1][2]

The complex has appeared in the film WarGames (1983), as the base of "Stargate Command" in the television series Stargate SG-1, and in many other films and games, contributing to its image as a place where secrets are kept.[1]
