Overview

In May 2001 the Disclosure Project held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. It featured more than twenty witnesses, most of them former military personnel, and urged Congress to hold hearings on UFOs and extraterrestrials.[1] ABC News reported that the witnesses said they had seen evidence of aliens or UFOs. Founder Steven Greer said some 400 witnesses were ready to testify.[1] On 9 May, at the National Press Club, aerospace illustrator Mark McCandlish testified that gravity-propulsion research since the 1950s had produced three government or contractor-built craft by 1981 based on recovered UFOs, the so-called "Alien Reproduction Vehicle."[2] In April a briefing document given to some members of Congress claimed that a covert group controlled parts of the UFO issue through corporate projects and illegal special access programs. Former Lockheed contractor Don Phillips claimed Lockheed held extraterrestrial technology.[3]

Research and private study continued. In June James Woodward and colleagues published experiments that they said produced small transient changes in mass. See Mach effect.[2][4] On 3 November Colm Kelleher reported to a NIDS meeting that more than 150 black triangle sightings had been recorded.[4] On 17 December he told Jacques Vallée he had found a Blue Book file showing that Battelle's Howard Cross, author of the 1953 Pentacle memo, had himself reported a UFO in 1951.[4]

Other 2001 entries include claims passed to Vallée: a 1977 case linking cattle mutilations to Army helicopters, physicist Eric Davis's story of a reverse-engineering project called "Zodiac," and consultant Jim Westwood's view that the MJ-12 papers were disinformation.[3][2] Eric Davis also said the Advanced Deep Space Transport group, which included Harold Puthoff and Lockheed representatives, looked at UFO data.[5]
