Coulthart was born in the United Kingdom, grew up partly in New Zealand and earned a law degree at Victoria University of Wellington. He joined The New Zealand Herald in 1982, then worked in Australian television: on A Current Affair (1989–1992), on the ABC's Four Corners from 1992, and for about 14 years on the Nine Network's Sunday program from 1995, followed by Channel Seven's Sunday Night and 60 Minutes Australia until 2018.[1]

His awards include the 2008 Gold Walkley, Australia's top journalism prize, shared with Nick Farrow for the investigation Butcher of Bega, four other Walkleys, a 1996 Logie award, and a share of the 2015 Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History for his biography of war correspondent Charles Bean. His books include The Lost Diggers, about recovered First World War photographs.[1]

UAP reporting

Coulthart's book In Plain Sight: An Investigation into UFOs and Impossible Science (2021) argued that governments have long concealed evidence of non-human intelligence. He presented Seven News's The UFO Phenomenon (2021) and from 2022 co-hosted the podcast Need to Know. In June 2023, days after The Debrief published Grusch's claims, Coulthart's NewsNation interview with Grusch brought them to a television audience. NewsNation later signed him as a special correspondent.[1][2][3]

Criticism

The ABC's Media Watch questioned the lack of evidence behind his reporting on a U.S. cover-up, and Australian Skeptics gave him its 2023 "Bent Spoon" award for uncritical journalism. Reviewers including writer Jason Colavito and physicist Pippa Goldschmidt criticised In Plain Sight for accepting unverified claims. He also drew criticism for public-relations work in 2018 for soldier Ben Roberts-Smith, whom a court in 2023 found had been involved in unlawful killings in Afghanistan.[1][4][5]
