1993 in UFO history — the UAP Timeline records 7 events in 1993, mostly about disinformation & hoaxes and government programs. People named in these events include Laurance Rockefeller, Bill Clinton, C. B. "Scott" Jones, John Gibbons, Richard Weaver.
Overview
On 10 September 1993 The X-Files premiered on Fox. The series followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigating unsolved paranormal cases, and it ran until 2002, with two films and later revivals.[1] It helped bring the abduction phenomenon and government-conspiracy narratives into mainstream pop culture.[2] In Washington, New Mexico congressman Steven Schiff asked about the Roswell records that year. This led the General Accounting Office to open an inquiry and direct the Air Force to investigate.[3] In Britain, a 2 December Ministry of Defence memo noted that Russia had a small team studying unidentified aerial phenomena.[4] Britain's own secret study, Project Condign, ran from 1996 to 2000.[2]
The timeline's 1993 entries concern official handling of the subject. On 15 April papers from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy show discussion of the "Rockefeller Initiative." They refer to the CIA asking for a UFO briefing to be prepared for the White House science adviser.[5] See also Laurance Rockefeller, C. B. "Scott" Jones, John Gibbons and Bill Clinton. On 22 July the FBI told researcher Nick Redfern it held a closed file on "Majestic-12," labelled "Espionage."[5] On 12 October Air Force Colonel Richard Weaver told Redfern the Air Force considered MJ-12 and its documents "bogus," though he could not explain how it reached that view.[6]
Other entries include the first public test, on 1 August, of the Air Force Research Laboratory's MARAUDER plasma gun; an affidavit by radio operator Earl Zimmerman about 1947 saucer rumours at a base; and transfer papers Dan Sherman offered as evidence of his claimed program.[6][4]
