2017 in UFO history — the UAP Timeline records 7 events in 2017, mostly about government programs and secrecy & cover-up. People named in these events include Martin Tajmar, Tom DeLonge, John Podesta, Neil McCasland, Rob Weiss.
Overview
2017 began the modern era of official UFO interest. On 16 December The New York Times revealed the Pentagon's secret Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, funded with $22 million from 2007 to 2012.[1][2] The paper also published Navy infrared videos of unexplained objects, made available by Tom DeLonge's company To The Stars Academy.[2][3] Luis Elizondo, who says he ran AATIP, then working for To The Stars Academy, led the campaign to release the videos and said he wanted to shed light on the program.[1] In December the Defense Department confirmed it had a program collecting data on military UFO sightings.[4] A reported 43% of Americans became more interested in UFOs after the videos appeared.[3] Mainstream attention to the subject rose sharply.[2]
The timeline's 2017 entries include DeLonge's statement on a 26 October podcast that his advisers included Air Force generals, a Lockheed Skunk Works executive, John Podesta, Harold Puthoff and former Pentagon official Christopher Mellon.[5] On 2 November Navy scientist Salvatore Pais filed a patent for a triangular craft said to manipulate quantum vacuum fluctuations for propulsion. After an initial rejection, the Navy's aviation technology chief appealed, saying it would "become a reality," and the patent was approved.[6] In April three Air Force majors published a doctrine paper on using advanced propulsion, citing James Woodward's Mach-effect work.[5] On 22 March the National Nuclear Security Administration disclosed its planetary defence partnership with NASA.[7] Other entries include astronomer Marc D'Antonio's claim of a secret Navy underwater-object program and Catherine Austin Fitts's paper on unsupported Pentagon and HUD accounting adjustments.[5][8]
