Steven Macon Greer (born 1955) is an American ufologist and retired physician who founded the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) and the Disclosure Project, which campaigns for the release of what it says is secret government knowledge of UFOs and advanced energy technology.[1]
Early life and medicine
Greer was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He says he saw a UFO at close range as a child and again at 18, and that he taught Transcendental Meditation in the early 1970s. He earned a degree in biology from Appalachian State University in 1982 and a medical degree from East Tennessee State University in 1987, and worked as an emergency-room physician before retiring in 1998 to concentrate on UFOs.[1]
CSETI and contact
Greer founded CSETI in 1990 to seek peaceful contact with extraterrestrial civilisations. He redefined the term "close encounter of the fifth kind" to mean contact started by humans, and CSETI groups attempt such contact through meditation and other methods.[1][2]
Disclosure Project
Greer founded the Disclosure Project in 1993 to gather testimony from former government and military personnel. On 9 May 2001 he presented about 20 of them at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., said hundreds more were ready to testify, and called for congressional hearings.[1][3]
Films
Greer has promoted several documentaries. Sirius (2013) presented the "Atacama skeleton" as possibly alien, but genetic tests showed it was human. Unacknowledged (2017), narrated by Giancarlo Esposito, was crowdfunded and topped international documentary download charts. Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind (2020) was poorly reviewed: Variety called it "fantasy propaganda" and The Hollywood Reporter said it framed recent UFO news misleadingly.[1][4]
