Linda Moulton Howe (born 20 January 1942) is an American television producer and investigative reporter best known for her 1980 documentary on cattle mutilations, A Strange Harvest, and for decades of reporting on UFOs and related claims through her website Earthfiles and the radio program Coast to Coast AM. She was also one of the best-known targets of Air Force disinformation in the 1980s.[1][2]
Early life and education
Howe was born in Boise, Idaho. She won the 1963 Miss Idaho title and competed in the Miss America pageant. She earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Colorado in 1965 and a master's degree in communication from Stanford University in 1968.[1]
Television career and A Strange Harvest

From 1978 to 1983 Howe was director of special projects at KMGH-TV in Denver, producing documentaries on environmental subjects. Her 1980 documentary A Strange Harvest, about the wave of cattle mutilations in the western United States, suggested that the unusual wounds were caused by extraterrestrials. It won a regional Emmy Award. In 1982 she received Colorado's Florence Sabin Award.[1][3]
The Kirtland documents

In 1983, while developing a documentary for HBO provisionally called UFOs: The ET Factor, Howe was approached by Richard Doty, who presented himself as an Air Force intelligence agent and offered access to government records. At Kirtland Air Force Base he showed her a document he described as a briefing for the president, describing alien visits, crash retrievals and a secret "Project Aquarius", and promised film that never materialised; the HBO project collapsed. Doty later acknowledged in the 2013 documentary Mirage Men that he had deliberately misled her as part of a disinformation effort.[1][4][5]
Later work

Howe's books include An Alien Harvest (1989), Glimpses of Other Realities (two volumes, 1993 and 1998) and Mysterious Lights and Crop Circles (2002). In 1999 she founded the Earthfiles website, where she reports on UFOs, crop circles, animal mutilations and environmental science. She was a frequent guest and fill-in host on Coast to Coast AM, appearing with Art Bell from 1991 and George Noory from 2003, before ending her regular appearances in 2019.[1][6]
Criticism
Skeptic Joe Nickell called her a "credulous journalist", and writers on the subject have noted that her mutilation claims rest on ambiguous evidence from decomposing carcasses. Supporters value her long record of interviews with people who say they worked on secret projects.[1][3]
